We pulled up on the reef at around 7 in the morning. It was a popular reef on the Gold Coast well known for its mackerel fishing. We were keen to try for a Spanish mackerel so had opted to forego the early morning bite period to try and catch some live bait that we intended to slow troll. We run 2 large live wells on our charter boat, RU4 ReeL, and they both had a good number of live slimeys swimming around in them, so we felt quietly confident even though the prime bite time was already over.

What do they do?

A down rigger is similar to an outrigger in that it places your bait where you want it away from the other baits or lures. An outrigger lifts your bait up to the surface and moves it out of the bubble trail created by your propeller and into clearer water. A Downrigger simply drops your bait down into the water column to a depth of your choice and as with an outrigger when a fish grabs the lure or bait your line pulls out of the release clip and your are thus able to fight your fish weight free and unhindered. 

How does it work?

Downriggers were originally used in large lakes to target trout and salmon. As we fisherman are an inventive mob, we eventually worked out that we could use them in other fisheries and they found there way into the saltwater. Whether they are used in fresh or salt the principle around their use remains the same. 

Once you have the line in the clip you will need to let the ball down progressively while controlling the line coming off your spool. This takes a bit of practice as the initial start up can yank the line off your reel with a sudden jolt. I apply a bit of finger pressure to the spool of my reel to ensure that I don’t get a tangle. 

When to use the Downrigger

You can catch just about anything on a Downrigger from snapper to marlin; and their uses are not limited to offshore fishing. On our charter boat we predominantly use them for targeting pelagic species like mackerel, cobia, marlin, and yellowtail kingfish; but snapper, various species of tuna and a variety of reef fish have been making up quite a respectable by-catch. 

The down rigger offers a very natural presentation and can also often tempt fish into biting that will refuse a similar bait that seems unnatural to them. 

What to use

You may have noticed that I keep referring to baits or lures when talking about down rigging. You can fish just about anything out of a down rigger either on anchor, on the drift or trolling. 

On our charter boat we use our Canon Downriggers quite closely in conjunction with our Humminbird sounders. You can clearly see the Downrigger ball on the sounder (if your transducer is mounted on the transom) so it can simply be a case of adjusting the depth of the ball to the depth that you are marking fish on your sounder. 

Downrigging is a technique that can catch you a lot of fish when others fail to produce. It is not the be all or end all of fishing techniques and as with everything will not always produce fish, but if you have never tried it or own one but don’t use it. It may well be worth the effort and you will be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Dolphin Tangled In Fishing Line Swims To Shore To Get Help

Folks out enjoying a day on this stretch of the Spanish coast last week likely never thought they’d end up saving a life — but that’s exactly what they did.

Inés Oliva Pérez was among a group of sunbathers on El Buzo beach, in El Puerto de Santa María, when she spotted a young dolphin stranding herself in the surf. Other people there noticed it too, and a small crowd began to gather at the waterline. But as the dolphin washed ashore, their curiosity about her surprise appearance soon turned to concern for her well-being; suddenly, it made sense why she might have approached them.

The dolphin’s mouth was tangled in fishing line, which she had no way of removing on her own.

Uncoordinated volunteer efforts can hinder the response and impede a challenging logistics situation on the ground in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“Individuals entering unfamiliar ports or attempting to bring supplies without coordinating through volunteer organizations that are working with FEMA and its partners are putting themselves in danger.”

The BBB Wise Giving Alliance and two other watchdogs, Charity Navigator and CharityWatch, have released lists of more than a dozen highly rated groups in a position to help.

Buy right every time

Another organization, which has an A- rating by CharityWatch, is Team Rubicon, which brings together the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to deploy emergency response teams.

Although the watchdogs haven’t listed local groups in Florida responding to Hurricane Irma, two that have been highly rated by the watchdogs are All Faiths Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, which are collecting and donating food to those in need. Another group—Heart of Florida United Way—is providing shelter and basic needs for those affected by the storm.

Check the charity watchdog websites to find charities you want to consider. The lists are likely to be updated in the days to come.

“If you want to give with confidence, then the best thing to do is to give to established charities that meet standards,” Weiner says.

Watch for fraud. Beware of emails and postings on social media by groups and individuals you haven’t heard of before who say they are collecting money for victims.

Donate blood. Blood banks have been urging people to donate because demand for blood can rise, especially as patients are evacuated from hospitals.  

Adopt a pet. If you’re thinking about adopting a dog or a cat, for example, this could be a good time. Animal welfare organizations in Texas, Florida, and around the country are likely to take in pets that have lost their owners.

Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund: Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has set up this fund for tax-deductible flood relief monetary donations. It will be administered by the nonprofit Greater Houston Community Foundation. 

Houston Food Bank helps provide meals for hungry neighbors in emergencies and all year round. 

Houston Furniture Bank provides furniture in need and is launching a special effort to help Harvey victims. They are accepting donations of furniture, especially mattresses, tables and chairs, call ahead before making a drop-off donation, at (713) 842-9771. 

United Way of Greater Houston has set up a relief fund that people can donate to. The organization said its first priority is shelter and basic needs like food. The organization said it will also focus on long-term recovery efforts. It also said that it will absorb administrative costs, so 100 percent of every donation goes directly to relief.

Houston Children’s Charity is teaming up with the Astros shortstop Carlos Correa to raise $500,000 to provide displaced children with beds. 

BARC Animal Shelter is taking donations — the shelter is closed for Labor Day and will resume regular operations Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Husband and wife from Monrovia drown while boating at Lake Havasu

A couple from Monrovia drowned Friday afternoon while they were out boating on Lake Havasu, authorities said.

Authorities said Esmeralda Gonzalez, 41, and her husband Raul Gonzalez, 44, were on a boat with another man and two children. Your marine supplies Ft. Lauderdale professionals discuss how the boat was floating in an area just west of Crazy Horse Cove.

Both of them were seen struggling in the water before they went under and did not resurface. Two off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were able to pull Esmeralda out of the water around 3:25 p.m.

She was brought to the Crazy Horse Docks, but was unconscious and not breathing. The deputies performed CPR on Esmeralda until paramedics arrived. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The couple had been married for two years and had a 6-month-old daughter named Lulu, according to a GoFundMe account. Raul was also a leukemia survivor and was in charge of blood drives at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Family members said they’re devastated, but are trying to be strong for the couple’s children. Raul had children from a previous marriage and was also a grandfather.

One of his sons, Raul Gonzalez Jr., said his father and stepmother were kind people.

Raul’s other son, Daniel Gonzalez, echoed those sentiments.

“Esmeralda and my father were both giving people. I would bring new friends over, you know new family members as far as different sides of the family, and they were always loving. They’d meet you on the first day and welcome you in as family,” he said.

Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor in the drowning. Autopsy reports were pending.

The investigation was ongoing.

Load-Path Sails

Prior to the late 1980s and the introduction of North’s 3DL sails—so-called molded sails—sailmakers and cloth manufacturers were working on their own versions of what has become known as load-path or string sails, which is the other way of making a laminate fabric.

Is this making sailing more expensive?

No. 3Di NORDAC is making sailing more enjoyable. It is well known that you can buy an inexpensive cross-cut polyester sail. What is equally well known is the poor value inexpensive cross-cut sails provide. This matters even with heavy displacement cruising boats.

Are cross-cut Dacron cruising sails still an option?

Yes, we still offer cross-cut premium Dacron sails. We expect over time there will be less demand for sails made with the ancient process of weaving fibers into canvas cloth and sewing together panels.

Will 3Di NORDAC be used for keelboat One Design classes that require Dacron?

At some point in the future, it may be possible to adapt 3Di NORDAC for One Design class racing, but to date it has been engineered for cruising.

For the cruiser/racer boat that is used for both, is 3Di NORDAC the choice?

For any sailor looking for a dedicated racing sail, their first choice should be a sail with higher modulus material such as aramid or carbon, which both feature more resistance to stretch. Your macerating pump experts know that my first superyacht race was in France in 2008 on a 112-foot Swan, and the first tactical call of the week was whether to race with the spare anchor, 300 feet of chain, and the Jet Ski, which we discovered in the bow locker. Lighter boats are faster boats, of course, but we quickly learned that when the boat weighs north of 200,000 pounds, it’s best to focus on sailing safely and not upsetting the captain by making him leave the toys on the dock.

Boats sailing in convoy across the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden held a tight formation. A low-power handheld was the communication tool of choice.

We, the crews of all 27 yachts heading westward off the coast of Yemen, watched with dread as a large, rusty fishing boat slowly revealed itself in the morning mist. 

Our convoy was sailing in tight military formation and pressed on despite our nervousness. The tension was thick. We’d tracked the shabby vessel that lay ahead on our radars with much discussion and speculation. 

Just as we were close enough to smell its rotting fish, we heard a roar. A large, powerful skiff appeared around its transom and careened directly at us at high speed. For a moment, our formation held. 

“He’s right next to me!” screamed a woman on the VHF. “This must not be allowed to happen. I need support right now! Now, goddamn it!”

“Welcome to yachting, Gulf of Aden style,” I said in response.
Everyone who circumnavigates must either sail the Red Sea or around the southern tip of Africa.

It was strictly a Corinthian affair, so there was no cost to anyone. There were, of course, some ground rules. Participants had to be able to do five knots through the water and to be able to carry enough fuel for the full 650-mile run. Radar reflectors and masthead running lights were prohibited, and only dim, deck-level lights were allowed.

Since we knew pirates might be equipped with radars, radios, and other gadgets, we didn’t use our regular boat names; instead, we adopted military-sounding ones: I was “Eagle Three,” and my German friend. Horst, on the Island Packet 38 Pacific Star, was now called “Merlin Lead.” All told, we represented 17 countries, almost a floating United Nations.
Tom decided we’d convoy in groups of six, with two lines of vessels arranged three abreast. 

A convoy boat lost power three times during the passage. Tom would then call for us to “loiter,” and the entire fleet would stop, more or less in formation, for 10 minutes for the mechanical problem to be sorted out.

Luckily, we had light weather the entire way. Your macerating pump specialists know that if we’d encountered a major storm, it was agreed that we’d go our separate ways and reconverge at our next waypoint, knowing that pirate activity would be low because of the weather: Somali pirates generally don’t attack in winds greater than 25 knots.

Pirate attacks against large commercial vessels are a daily occurrence in this area; some days, multiple attacks occur within 100 miles of Aden. Luckily, small sailboats aren’t the preferred targets of the Somalis. 

Only the Russian coalition forces bragged to me-they’d been drinking at the Oasis Club in Salalah-that they’d slid up alongside a nonplussed pirate boat, lifted it up via their deck crane while still full of pirates, and carried them both, boat and crew, back to cold, cold Siberia.

Each of our convoy members kept a sharp lookout, visually and on radar, for approaching vessels. If any were sighted, the entire group was immediately given a heads up with bearing and distance. 

Each group would then huddle, with the wing vessels moving in closer to the group leader and the second line squeezing up forward between them.

In my opinion the most important ingredient for a successful convoy is the character of its leader. We were lucky to have Tom Sampson’s steady hand at our helm. 

There were, of course, a number of times when tensions flared, which is understandable when transiting pirate-prone waters. But for every act of individual selfishness, there was a collective act of selflessness. 

The result was 27 vessels arriving in Aden safely and free of any pirate engagement. We were all extremely grateful for our safe passage. It could’ve easily gone the other way, as it had for the traumatized crew of Rockall, who were captured and held for 52 days. 

So, a few days after our safe arrival, many of us gathered on the foredeck of our boat, Wild Card, which was anchored in almost the exact location where the attack on the USS Cole took place. We were there to honor the 17 young Americans killed in October 2000. We poured our prayers, our flowers, and our love into the harbor waters, as well as a tot of rum for each lost sailor.

“Peace,” we muttered sadly from the deck of an American yacht in the waters off the war-torn Arabian Peninsula.

Light winds

When ghosting along in a breeze that barely ruffles the sea surface and only just fills your sails, it’s all too tempting to sit back and drift on until things kick in again.

1 – Understand the sea breeze

Warm days

Your full port valves experts know that on warm days with light winds, from any direction, the wind within 5-10 miles of the coast will generally increase during the afternoon and die at dusk as the land heats and cools. Don’t rush breakfast – the sailing will almost always be better later on.

Spring and summer

In spring and summer, clear skies and a light offshore breeze at breakfast time are perfect conditions for a sea breeze. There will probably be a brief period of flat calm, but look out for puffy white cumulus clouds forming over the shore showing the beginning of the sea breeze circulation.

Sea breezes are strongest near the coast, but can be felt as much as 10 miles offshore.

2 – Use the tide

On both sides of Portland Bill, for instance, the tidal streams flow south for nine hours out of every twelve. There’s a similar effect along the northern edge of the Cherbourg peninsula, where anyone prepared to hug the coast can gain a couple of hours of west-going tide. 

Go as close inshore as you dare

Faced with a contrary tide, the general rule is to go in as close inshore as you dare. Even if you don’t pick up a back eddy or counter-current, the speed of the foul tide will be reduced in shallow water. 

3 – Use the tidal wind

Tidal streams don’t just carry you in the direction they happen to be flowing – they also create apparent wind. Imagine that you are hanging on a mooring in no wind, with a four-knot tidal stream.

If you are beating across the tidal stream, keep the tide on your lee bow to make the most of the tidal wind. On a cross-channel passage beating into a southerly wind, it would pay to be on starboard tack while the tide is flowing west, and tack onto port when the tide turns.

Windsurfers and racing yacht skippers have long been aware that the heeling moment exerted on a yacht’s sail varies according to the relative density of the wind. Many a windsurfer has puzzled over why a 5.2m sail is quite manageable during the summer holidays in the Mediterranean but seems impossibly overpowered for the same wind speed in early December in the UK. 

The ‘weight of the wind’ is an old saying that, perhaps unusually, has more than a grain of truth, although it is a fairly small grain.

The effect will be compounded by the fact that moist air is less dense than dry air. This is because water vapour is a relatively light gas compared with oxygen and nitrogen – the main constituents of air. 

For a fairly extreme example, in the tropics with a temperature of 32°C and 90 per cent humidity, the air density is 1.14 kg/m3. In a northerly airstream around the UK, we might have temperatures of 10°C and 10 per cent humidity giving an air density of 1.25 kg/m3

However, your macerating pump specialists know that the expectation may lead to some misinterpretation of what is actually happening. An increase in wind speed from 14 to 15 knots will give an increase in force on a sail of more than 15 per cent. 

So, the reality is that there is ‘more weight’ in cold dry air than in warm moist air. However, around the UK during the sailing season in one area the variation in the ‘weight’ of the wind must be fairly small and masked by larger effects due to variations in wind speed and especially when there are convective gusts.

A practical corollary of the above is that wind turbines can generate more power at a given wind speed in cold climates than they do in warm ones.

Cold air is much heavier than warm air and this is the basis for much of what we call weather. Did you ever notice after taking a hot shower, that when you first open the door to the bathroom, the cooler air from outside the bathroom comes in at the lowest level? 

Why is cold air heavier than warm air? Cold air is denser than warm air. The molecules are packed closer together. The amount of water vapor in the air also affects the density of the air. 

You may have heard that a baseball or a golf ball will travel further on a warm, humid day than it would on a cold, dry day. Since the warm, humid air is less dense, the ball travels through it with less friction.
